Dr. David L. Benson Ph.D.
Dr. Benson attended the University of Nebraska at Lincoln where he graduated with a B.S. in Agronomy and a crop production option. After completing his B.S. Dr. Benson continued his education at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa and completed his PhD in Plant Breeding and Cytogenetics.
After finishing his college education Dr. Benson began work for Mycogen Plant Sciences as a corn breeder and station manager for four years and then moved on to work as a Product Development Research Scientist at Pioneer Hi-Bred International in York, Nebraska for seven years.
While at Pioneer Hi-Bred International Dr. Benson became the most experienced breeder in the industry working with and developing brittle snap resistant lines. Dr. Benson’s persistence in retesting and selecting hybrids for testing has led to 30 hybrid and inbred patents that have greatly contributed to the profitability and sustainability to Nebraska Farmers.
After his years at Pioneer Dr. Benson created Benson Seed Research, a Great Plains contract seed research and consulting business and has been conducting corn yield trials, transgenic testing and corn seed production since 2001. After seeing some success as an independent contract researcher Dr. Benson created Great Plains Genetics LLC and continues to test, develop and promote hybrid and inbred seed. In 2006 Cornhusker Hybrids, LLC was started up to provide a commercial outlet for the inbred lines and hybrids developed by Great Plains Genetics, LLC and evaluated by Benson Seed Research. LLC.
Dr. Benson has published six abstracts and two publications Inbreeding depression rates before and after recurrent selection, and Selection for Brittle Snap Resistance in a line development program which was also presented at the 1998 American Seed Trade Association meeting in Chicago, Illinois.
